Dentistry involves enhancing the patient's oral health through preventive methods and therapeutic procedures.
As the name suggests, preventive methods are focused on preventing oral diseases from developing. These methods include teaching the proper brushing technique and applying topical fluoride to the teeth.
On the contrary, when the disease is already present, the dentist's only option is to treat it through restoration. Since they are often irreversible, these procedure protocols require high precision and expertise. This is because enamel doesn't grow back, and the dentist usually requires to prep the tooth before restoring it. Therefore, the dentist must avoid making any mistakes during the procedure.
Since this skill is developed through constant practice, dentistry students must learn to perform each procedure on a teeth model before attempting them on a genuine patient.
Teeth models are simple tools that simulate a human mouth. They are used to practice dental procedures and polish the dentistry students' abilities before being allowed to treat patients.
Teeth models, also known as dental models, are usually made of a high-quality and resistant plastic base material. This allows it to withstand its usage through dental practices. Also, it prevents it from breaking if it is dropped by accident.
Dental models can be made the same size as an average mouth. Nonetheless, some dental study models are enlarged. Also, they are used by the dentist often to help the patient visualize what is being explained to them.
There are several types of teeth models with different functions, such as:
The typodont is a dental study model used by dentistry students. The teeth of the typodont are fixed to the dental model through small screws at the bottom. This allows the student to dislodge the tooth after practicing a restoration and replace it with a new one to do it again.
The typodont can be rigged with specialized teeth that simulate decay and other conditions.
● Regular dental study model:
This model is used simply for patients' education purposes. They can be enlarged for better visualization. Furthermore, the teeth usually can't be removed in these models. Therefore, they are more simple in design.
These teeth models can represent an adult mouth or a child's mouth.
Furthermore, some models have a clear base or gums to allow the patient to visualize how the teeth roots look inside the bone.
● Orthodontic models:
These types of models are equipped with specialized teeth with ortodontik appliances bonded to them. Therefore, the dentist can explain more clearly how the brackets, bands, and wires work during orthodontic treatment.
● Implant models:
Diş implantları can be hard to explain to patients. Therefore, the dentist can rely on a dental implant model. These models display how an implant looks when placed inside the bone and can help the patient understand how they work.
